Thoughtful storage has reduced clutter and stress, and improved heating and cooling means we’re comfortable year round."

At the rear of a pre-1911 Queensland cottage sits a light-filled contemporary extension designed around a landscaped courtyard.

Soaring timber ceilings & floor-to-ceiling glazing evolved from the design approach of doing more with less. The building footprint was minimised to create a high-quality interior space for the family to enjoy.

The courtyard design encourages cross-ventilation through louvre windows & orientating the house to welcome the morning sun while buffering the harsh western sun. Connection to landscape & natural light was a key design strategy.

A deliberate level change between the cottage & the extension negotiates the sloping site while also considering floor levels so that the cottage can be raised & built under in the future if the opportunity presents itself.

The extension allows the young family to stay in a suburb they love for the longer term; they now have a functional home which has increased their liveability & can also accommodate friends & family for entertaining.
