Drawing inspiration from traditional Queensland cottage details where materials change at a specific datum line; Light Court House offers a contemporary interpretation of the existing Queensland cottage on the site.
The existing cottage has been retained, raised, built under & extended towards the rear of the site to create a considered family home. As one enters the home, a continuous stone datum line wraps the interior & relates to a warm timber wall lining above, visually connecting the interior of this contemporary extension.
The warmth of timber, texture of tiles & use of bold natural stone combine to create a humble and balanced feel inside the home. The building footprint is modest, but functional & rich in detail.
Constrained by flood requirements & a 405 sqm block, the design prioritises natural light & ventilation through a landscaped light court immediately visible as one enters the home.
Beautifully framed windows orientate towards the landscape at the rear, while louvre windows & varying ceiling heights offer a high quality of internal space & natural airflow.
